Organization History
Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc.® is a professional organization of registered nurses and nursing students dedicated to uplifting the nursing profession and improving the health of communities. Founded on October 16, 1932, at Freedman’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., by Aliene C. Ewell, RN, and eleven pioneering nurses, the organization was established to promote higher standards of nursing education, encourage professional growth, and expand opportunities within healthcare. Today, Chi Eta Phi spans graduate and undergraduate chapters across multiple regions in the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands, united under the motto “Service for Humanity.”

Through programming focused on health promotion, disease prevention, leadership development, mentorship, recruitment, retention, and scholarship support, Chi Eta Phi works to prepare nurses who are clinically skilled and socially responsive. Members are committed not only to excellence in patient care, but also to advocacy, education, and community engagement.
The organization’s mission is to advance professional development in nursing, encourage individuals to pursue careers in healthcare, strengthen relationships among nursing professionals, and collaborate with community and professional partners. Guided by a vision of building healthier communities, Chi Eta Phi cultivates leaders who influence social change at local, national, and global levels.
